Although Thomas MacKay has become a very collectable artist, very little is known about him except that he exhibited at the Royal Academy on a few occasions. We know he was a Liverpool man who had a studio in Littleton, Cheshire, from whence he made regular painting excursions into the countryside around Leamington and Warwick.
He flourished towards the end of the Victorian era, when much of the sentimentalism so dear to the painters of that period was being swept away.
