Artist: Joseph Kirkpatrick (fl. 1891 - 1928) Entitled: In Eastham Woods - Autumn Size: 27cm x 19cm Description: Watercolour, signed & dated 1899 Price: £950 A genre and landscape painter in watercolours, Joseph Kirkpatrick was born in Liverpool and studied at the Liverpool School of Art under John Finnie, the well known landscape painter and head of School until 1896, Kirkpatrick continued his training in Paris at The Academie Julian, the best of the French teaching schools after the Aacademie des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Gabriel Ferrier (one of the great late nineteenth century French genre artists) And Adolphe Bouguereau. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1898 to 1928. Some of his work which portrays humble farming people at work has an earthy quality reminiscent of some of the French Nineteenth-century genre artists and to some degree of the paintings of Robert Waite. Others are lyrical paintings of the countryside in the summer-time. Kirkpatrick lived in London for a number of years before moving to Arundel in Sussex in 1916.
