Artist: Frank Wasley (fl. 1880-1914) Entitled: Afternoon Sun on the Lagoon, Venice Size: 36 x 26cm Description: Watercolour, Signed Price: Sold A Watercolour artist who also painted in Oils, Frank Wasley specialised in painting marine subjects, but he also produced a number of landscape scenes, his work has a Turneresque quality to it. Even so, his work was not fully appreciated until the 1970's, when dealers and collectors alike suddenly became aware of his Venetian scenes and others were worth collecting. Some of Wasleys marine subjects, especially his harbour scenes, with their figure work of women standing on the jetties, are practically excellent impressionist paintings. His Oils in particular were painted in a free and powerful style. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, and the Royal Society of Scottish Artists. Although he is considered to be a North Country Artist, he moved around the country a great deal, first to Whitby, then to Weston -Super-Mare, Littlehampton and also Henley-on-Thames. His work is represented in the Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and Whitby. |
