A well-known watercolour artist in his day, Henry John Kinnaird was a landscape artist who painted rural scenes in the manner of artist John Hooper, Kinnaird exhibited in London from 1880, mainly at The Royal Academy and The Royal Society of British Artists, and he lived for a time in the fashionable Camden Town area, before the urban spread brought poverty to a region which had once been known for its gracious houses and quiet country lanes. He later moved to Ringmer, near Lewes, Sussex.
Although he painted many River scenes, Kinnaird was most at home painting studies of the rural way of life that was already beginning to change. Many of his works were of harvesting scenes painted around the Sussex and Surrey areas.
