Artist's Statement My main inspiration comes from landscape, seascape, and the sensuous, near-edible quality of the paint. I work mostly in oils and colour and paint surface are among my main concerns; I'm especially drawn to dramatic light effects on land and sea, and take intentional liberties with reality - re-arranging topography, tilting planes, heightening colour, and exaggerating contrasts of tone. My aim is always to make the painting work better and to convey to the viewer more how it felt to be there than merely what it looked like. I am currently investigating aerial archaeology and the relationship between aerial views and what is actually on the ground; it is interesting how different it feels to be above looking down and below looking up.
