JEREMY BARLOW ROI

Jeremy Barlow was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire in 1945. His introduction to the world of Art came at the age of 12 when he successfully negotiated the sale of a watercolour to an aunt for half a crown. Inevitably, however, it was to be some years before these embryonic signs blossomed into a successful career as a full time painter.
He had harboured a childhood ambition to become a cartoonist and spurned the traditional boyhood pursuit of rugby and cricket in favour of a more creative pastime. Indeed, he was rarely happy unless he was doodling with a well-chewed pencil or working with a worn watercolour mop!
It was perhaps natural then that a former education in Kettering should be followed by a course at Northampton School of Art where he studied illustration. He later worked in art studios in London and the Midlands but decided to become a full-time painter in the early 1970's after encouragement by galleries and other leading artists.
It was a risk. The basic techniques can be taught but to become a successful painter in oils, pastels or watercolour one must also rely on one's own natural skill, eye and character. This, together with the artist's owns feel for the composition of a picture determines the end result and, eventually, the reputation.
In Jeremy Barlow's case the reputation was gathering momentum by the mid 1970's, barely 5 years after becoming a professional.
In 1977 he went to live in Dusseldorf, Germany to concentrate on painting the landscapes and townscapes of Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and Italy. In Germany and Holland his following grew rapidly and his work was exhibited in many major European cities in both mixed and one-man exhibitions.
He returned to the U.K. in 1983 and now lives in a small village in Norfolk with his wife and children. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists and numerous major galleries in London and England where his exhibitions have been immensely successful.
He was elected an Associate Member of THE royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1990, a full Member in 1994 (R.O.I) AND A council Member in 1995.
He still travels in Europe extensively, painting not only the fine cities of Paris, Lyon, Amsterdam, Delft, Venice, Sienna, Cordoba, Seville and Granada but often in the small villages and towns "off the beaten track" to paint and record the more intimate studies of native life.
His paintings are to be found in numerous public, private and corporate collections worldwide.
