MICHAEL JAMES

Michael James is a sculptor of the classical tradition.
His bronze sculptures, whether the large dramatic pieces or the quiet stillness of the smaller more intimate studies, retain the initial fresh qualities and simplicity of the first, inspired clay sketches and studies from the live model that inform and refine the final work.
For Michael James, sculpture is an obsession; it is his life. For him the wonder and fascination of sculpture is its ability to be a solid object that can be seen, touched and walked around and yet remain an object of pure spirit. which through its relationship of structure form and balance comes to dominate the space that surrounds it. His work portrays an artist of substance at the height of his powers.
The inspiration for Michaels work has always been the human form and it is this together with his exquisite skills that make his work so individual, intricate and beautiful. Every sculpture speaks to its own time and if the work is serious and the intention serious then it may speak beyond its time.

Michael James had a classical training gaining a BA hons degree in fine art Sculpture in 1980 and a post graduate degree from the Royal Academy of Arts London in 1983 he is a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors his work is represented in public and private collections throughout the world including Patrick Lichfield the Natwest bank and Lord Gibson former chairman of the Arts Council.
